The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA’s) mission is to lead the national effort to protect and enhance the resilience of the nation’s physical and cyber infrastructure. CISA includes the CISA Management and Business Service Offices and six Divisions: the Cybersecurity Division (CSD), the Emergency Communications Division (ECD), the Integrated Operations Division (IOD), Infrastructure Security Division (ISD), the Stakeholder Engagement Division (SED), as well as, the National Risk Management Center (NRMC), which are headquartered with the National Capital Region (NCR).
CISA is the Nation’s risk advisor, working with partners to defend against today’s threats and collaborating to build more secure and resilient infrastructure for the future. In this role, CISA builds the Nation’s capacity to defend against cyber-attacks: the Agency works to provide cybersecurity tools, incident response capabilities, and assessment services to safeguard the Federal ‘.gov’ systems and systems that support national critical functions. As the Nation’s risk advisor, CISA has identified the fact that there is a workforce shortage in the cybersecurity field. This shortage is a critical risk to our Nation’s security posture. Recognizing the critical importance of cybersecurity professionals to national security, the Secretaries of Commerce and Homeland Security submitted a joint report to the President of the United States in 2017. The report, Supporting the Growth and Sustainment of the Nation’s Cybersecurity Workforce, stated that, “The Nation’s private and public sector cybersecurity workforce is the foundation for our future success in protecting U.S. national security and economic prosperity and in maintaining a competitive advantage.” Estimates place the global cybersecurity workforce shortage at approximately three million people worldwide, with roughly 300,000 job openings in the United States. This global shortage means American companies compete with employers all over the world as well as with each other to find cybersecurity talent.
Acknowledging the importance of securing cyberspace, other countries, including America’s adversaries, are rapidly building state-run national initiatives to train and develop cybersecurity talent. Moreover, the demand for cybersecurity professionals will increase over time, so the United States cannot fall behind our adversaries in this endeavor. We must act now to attract more people to cybersecurity careers, expand the skills of cybersecurity professionals, and ensure the continued growth of the cybersecurity pipeline for the future.
